Apologies to those who follow this blog for the long absence, but Bing has been out of town for a conference and I was ordered to complete the latest draft of my script before signing on here again. To say the least, I haven’t done that (for a variety of reasons), but it will be completed timely enough for me to post at least something here.
So, writing. I do it. At least I try to. Above I mentioned ‘latest draft,’ since that’s sort of the lingo one uses with this sort of thing, but honestly I don’t know that I’ve ever produced more than one complete draft of anything in my whole life. I guess I’ve created numerous drafts of individual pieces – or files since I write predominantly on a computer – but never the whole piece from scratch or even to a great extent.
I could very easily write one scene a dozen times a dozen different ways, then take pieces from each and wedge them together in some unholy Frankenstein’s monster; then I go back and add things to help make the obvious disconnects less disconnecty, the language sharper, etc. It’s not really a lengthy process (though I make it sound like it is whilst describing it to friends: “the hours I’ve worked on that – whew!”), but at most it takes an hour to sort it out depending on the size and content of the scene. Obviously more complicated scenes (and sequences) take longer to streamline to my liking, but it still doesn’t monopolize more than a couple of hours.
I’m almost finished at any rate. Of course the obvious sequel to the story is jutting its way into my brain, but I’m trying to hold it back till I’ve at least notched this one off. Sequels are always more inviting, and demanding, than the original work, with their promises of being automagically freer and less explosition heavy.
So, gaming. I game. Not often as of late sadly since I’ve grown responsibilities the older I’ve become. Work, debt, sleep, and now a girlfriend. I’m not complaining about any of these things, least of the all the latter, but they all act as a slight obstacle to my favorite passtime. That said, Mario Kart Wii is enormously fun; I can’t wait till Bing gets back later this evening and has a chance to play it finally. Even she seems enamored by the concept of turning a plastic wheel in midair. Not as enamored, per se, as she is with Wii Fit, but that’s a whole different animal and, fortunately, it isn’t out yet.
A Note On Cooking:
I’m not an expert chef by any rate, but I’m this close to tossing the damn toaster out the window and never touching one again. Want toast? Go to your local market and purchase Texas Toast; the brand doesn’t matter so long as it’s the thick, sliced stuff. [You could always buy or make a loaf yourself, but this is simpler.]
Take out a skillet and pour some canola / vegetable / whatever oil you use into it. Don’t pour a ton but don’t pour too little either; the bread will soak up some of it, so it’s important to be a bit liberal with its use. Put the heat on medium. Take a normal spoon and put enough butter in it to where it’s not quite to the spoon’s rim; then wipe the butter across one side of the bread, spreading it out evenly from edge to edge to edge to edge. Place it, butter-side down, into the skillet. After about a minute or so, flip it onto its back, and cook both sides till they’re a nice soft brown color.
[It's also important to keep the edges on the bread. I know, some people hate them and want them in the trash, but it traps the butter and keeps it from escaping, thus giving it no choice but to melt deeply into the bread.]
Now eat it.
Good, right?
